What is a doula?

A birth doula is a professional support person trained in the needs of an expecting mother and her family during pregnancy and childbirth.

There is tremendous value in hiring a doula and having one attend and support you throughout your birth. Birth doulas have a wealth of education and knowledge to share with expecting mothers and their families, which helps them to feel empowered and confident in the decisions they are making.

Research shows that women who have a birth doula are more likely to report having a more positive birth experience, decreased pain during birth, decreased labor time, and use fewer medical interventions. Doula’s help the expecting mother to feel empowered, educated, and in control of their own birth. They help decrease a mother’s stress by providing emotional encouragement, reassurance and comfort. They help expecting mothers to develop a birthing plan that is flexible and can adapt to unexpected events. They work with the mother to practice techniques and comfort measures that will be used during labor, in order for the mother to feel as prepared as possible.
